How do you make leads stick to you like glue?
The answer is simple: with a lead magnet.
Let’s get straight down to it with the what, why and how:
What is a lead magnet? Why does your business need to use lead magnets?
And… How do you create the killer lead magnet?
What is a lead magnet?
Put simply, a lead magnet is a bribe. In fact, another term for ‘lead magnet’ is actually ‘opt-in bribe’.
But there’s nothing dishonest, deceitful or unethical here. You are not tricking the unsuspecting public with a lead magnet at all.
It’s a simple arrangement. Nothing more, nothing less. The prospect agrees to type in their contact details in return for something from you – a pearl of wisdom, a nugget of information; something that will help them solve a problem they have.
You might not be entering into any form of binding contract when you put your contact details into a lead magnet form, but there is a tacit understanding that your details are going to be added to an email marketing list.
A lead magnet is a carrot you dangle in front of your prospects.
And as a business owner, you keep offering carrots to your leads.
Only carrots. No sticks.
Why does your business need to use lead magnets?
The fact is that all businesses need more leads. Of course, converting leads is another matter entirely. However, the more leads you have, the more conversions you will get.
A lead magnet draws the prospect in. Then it’s down to you.
You need to keep providing value for your leads and continue dangling those carrots in front of them.
With consistent and effective content marketing, you are gradually chipping away at your leads.
It’s all about playing the long game. We all want customers to press the magical ‘BUY!” button instantly. The reality is usually something very different.
Keep being useful to your leads. Keep engaging and entertaining them, and keep solving their problems for them.
Wear them down with how good you are!
How do you create the killer lead magnet?
The really good news is that a great lead magnet doesn’t need to be complicated or take ages to create. The best lead magnets tend to be short, sharp and simple.
A lead magnet needs to be specific. It should focus in on one problem that your prospects might be experiencing.
Don’t try and cover everything. Don’t try and give chapter and verse.
Just give a simple solution to a very specific problem.
The other piece of really good news is that a lead magnet can be virtually anything. PDF guides, cheat sheets and the like are popular. But it could just as easily be a video or a free trial of some sort.
What’s more, there’s every chance it could be a re-purposed piece of content that you already have.
There’s no point trying to reinvent the wheel.
Lead magnets need to have style and substance
More than anything, a lead magnet needs to deliver. It really needs to have style and substance in equal measure.
You are giving away something for free. But you don’t want your present to look cheap do you?
A lead magnet needs to look good and show off the professionalism of your brand.
Remember, first impressions count. It’s well worth employing the services of a professional designer to get the look absolutely spot on.
Failing that, there are a number of really good apps that provide a multitude of design templates you can use yourself. Many offer basic packages that are great value and some have free versions.
The irony is that you’ll probably need to be ‘lead magnetised’ yourself and give your own email details to gain access to them.
Last but not least… don’t forget the copy! Are you getting your message across effectively? Does your brand voice spring out from the screen? Does the copy engage?
